Delhi-Saharanpur Highway Launch, 150 Mohalla Buses Introduction, Other Delhi-Centric Projects To Hang Fire Due To MCC
Delhi Assembly Election 2025: Several development projects across Delhi will now face further delays due to the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct for upcoming assembly elections, compounding the already slow progress caused by the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). Projects from the Delhi government, central government, New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) are now on hold until the elections conclude.
Delhi-Saharanpur Highway Launch Faces Delay
One of the central government’s major projects, the Delhi-Saharanpur highway, was scheduled for inauguration before the elections. However, technical challenges prevented its launch. Although the new target is March 2025, even an earlier resolution of issues won’t lead to its inauguration due to the election restrictions.
Delhi MCD Parking Projects Affected
MCD’s plans to construct four parking lots in areas like Shastri Park, Rajendra Nagar, and Idgah in Karol Bagh have also been stalled. Initially intended for approval under the self-build model, these projects cannot move forward under the current code of conduct.
Shivaji Terminal Redevelopment Awaits Approval
NDMC’s ambitious redevelopment of Shivaji Terminal is another project caught in limbo. While the revised design awaited approval in upcoming council meetings, the election code has halted the process.
Parking Lot Operations Postponed
NDMC had planned to hand over the operation of 150 parking lots to a private company. With the tenure of the previous contractor ending in August 2024, the process of appointing a new contractor remains incomplete. The contract will now only be finalised after the elections.
Mohalla Buses Launch
The Delhi government’s initiative to improve last-mile connectivity through 150 Mohalla buses is also delayed. The buses are ready for operation, but the code of conduct prevents their launch for now.
Garbage Collection Tender Stalled
In the central zone, the MCD’s tender for garbage collection, previously approved administratively, was awaiting further approval in the House. This, too, has been postponed until after the elections.
