Arakan army update: In a significant turn of events that may impact the geographical boundaries of India, the Arakan Army, which is fighting against the military regime in Myanmar, is getting close to achieving independence. If reports are to be believed, Myanmar's Arakan army has captured 15 out of 18 provinces of the Rakhine state and is moving forward to capture more. Here are all the updates regarding the conflict between the Arakan army of Myanmar and the military government of Myanmar.
For those unversed, the Arakan army of Myanmar has been fighting the military junta for the last 4 years. Earlier in 2021, the Su Kyi government of Myanmar was overthrown in a coup by the military junta government in 2021 and since then, the military junta has been ruling the country.
Myanmar's Arakan Army captures Ann region
In the latter part of 2024, Myanmar's Arakan Army successfully captured Ann, which is considered the base of operations for the Myanmar Army's Western Command in Rakhine. Along with this strategic gain, the Arakan Army also took control of Maungdaw, thus asserting its dominance over the entire Bangladeshi border.
Earlier, news agency Reuters reported that Myanmar's rebel Arakan Army had released footage showing members from the ruling junta forces surrendering in the town of Ann, in Rakhine State.
Impact on Indian Economy
The growing strength of the Arakan Army poses multiple challenges to India, particularly in terms of investments, regional stability, and strategic initiatives in Myanmar. Proactive diplomatic engagement and increased focus on securing investments in Myanmar are crucial to mitigating these risks.
Movement across Mizoram-Myanmar border regulated
Security has been beefed up along the 510-km long Mizoram-Myanmar border and movement of people living within 10 kilometres on either side of the unfenced international border has been regulated following the directive of the Centre, an official said.
The official said that residents of both countries living within 10 km on either side of the border now require border pass to visit each other.
The border pass valid for a stay of up to seven days is being issued to both Myanmarese and Indian citizens visiting each other countries on production of documents verifying that they live within the territorial limit of 10 km on either side of the international border, he said on Saturday.
The initiative was taken by state police, Assam Rifles and health officials at some entry and exit points from December 31 based on the order and new guidelines issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), he said.
