New Delhi: Following Airtel, Reliance Jio also announced a partnership with Elon Musk's SpaceX to leverage Starlink’s low Earth orbit satellite technology to improve broadband connectivity across India. As per the agreement which is contingent to Starlink getting regulatory approvals from the Indian government, Jio will provide Elon Musk's company with its retail stores and online platform.

The company will not only handle the distribution of Starlink equipment but also offer customer support for installation and activation. Additionally, Jio and SpaceX are exploring broader collaborations to integrate their infrastructure, further strengthening India’s digital ecosystem.

“Our collaboration with SpaceX to bring Starlink to India strengthens our commitment and marks a transformative step toward seamless broadband connectivity for all. By integrating Starlink into Jio’s broadband ecosystem, we are expanding our reach and enhancing the reliability and accessibility of high-speed broadband in this AI-driven era, empowering communities and businesses across the country,” Mathew Oommen, Group CEO at Reliance Jio, said.

Likewise, Airtel’s partnership with SpaceX enables the telecom giant to distribute Starlink equipment through its retail network while delivering high-speed satellite internet to businesses and enterprises. The collaboration also aims to expand internet access in rural schools, healthcare centers, and remote regions, aligning with Airtel’s mission to bridge India’s digital divide.

Starlink Cost In India

Starlink’s hardware currently costs between Rs 25,000-Rs 35,000, with a monthly subscription estimated at Rs 5,000-Rs 7,000 — significantly higher than India’s average broadband expense of Rs 700-Rs1,500 per month. To drive widespread adoption, SpaceX may need to introduce India-specific pricing or collaborate with government-backed digital inclusion programs.

Jio and Airtel’s agreements with SpaceX hinge on obtaining necessary approvals from the Indian government. If cleared, these partnerships could transform internet accessibility nationwide, benefiting businesses, schools, healthcare providers, and underserved communities. With India’s two largest telecom giants supporting Starlink, the country is poised for a major leap toward digital inclusion.
