Pune Metro Update: More than 25 key junctions across four proposed Metro corridors in the Pune Metropolitan Region (PMR) will undergo a detailed traffic study ahead of the commencement of construction.
The study, which would be undertaken jointly by Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Maha Metro, is aimed at streamlining Metro works and minimising commuter disruptions post service launch, reported Times of India.
The upcoming corridors—Khadakwasla-Swargate-Kharadi, Hadapsar-Loni, Hadapsar-Saswad Road, and Nal Stop-Warje (Manikbaug) are expected to receive the Centre’s approval in the coming months. These alignments traverse densely populated zones and key junctions, covering over 48 km
"It is always better to proceed with coordinated efforts while executing bigger projects like the Metro. The administration is looking to appoint an agency to study the traffic patterns and status of the key chowks. Based on the findings, the agency will recommend various measures to be adopted during the Metro work," a PMC official was quoted as saying by ToI.
The Metro's proposed route from Hadapsar to Loni and Hadapsar to Saswad Road is aligned via the Pune-Solapur and Pune-Saswad-Pandharpur highways. A proposed Metro stretch from Nal Stop to Warje (Manikbaug) is aligned via key chowks like Karve Putala, Ambedkar Chowk and Warje Chowk on Karve Road.
PMC plans to study such key chowks on all the routes. At present the city has two operational Metro lines—PCMC to Swargate and Vanaz to Ramwadi, spanning 33 km. Construction on the 23 km Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar line is in advanced stages.
