U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that he is receiving numerous appeals to seek a third term in office, despite the constitutional restriction that bars any individual from being elected more than twice.
In an interview with Time magazine, Trump was asked about past comments where he stated he was “not joking” about potentially running for a third term. He responded by saying, “There are some loopholes,” though he quickly added, “I don’t believe in using loopholes.”
The U.S. Constitution’s 22nd Amendment clearly prohibits a third term,
stating: “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than
twice.” However, speculation has emerged that Trump could potentially return
to power indirectly — for example, by having his running mate, Senator JD
Vance, win the presidency in 2028 and then step aside, paving the way for
Trump to assume the role.
When asked about that specific scenario, Trump distanced himself, saying, “I don’t know anything about it,” but reiterated, “I am being inundated with requests.”
The former president’s comments come amid his ongoing 2024 campaign and legal challenges. While he didn’t confirm any intention to push constitutional limits, his remarks have once again stirred debate over presidential term limits and the extent of executive power in the U.S.
