Jammi and Kashmir: A woman and a young child from Jammu and Kashmir’s Uri sector died on Thursday night after a shell fired from across the border struck their vehicle as they attempted to flee intense shelling in the region. The incident comes amid escalating hostilities between India and Pakistan following a series of military exchanges and terror-linked attacks on Thursday, May 8.
The grieving family of the victims recounted the moments, “My name is Altaf Hussain,” a relative of the deceased told reporters at the hospital. “When the shelling started in Uri yesterday, my sister-in-law, who lives in Razarwani, thought that since the shelling had increased, she should take the children and leave. As soon as they left in the car, a shell hit them at Mohra. It hit the back of the car.”
According to Altaf, the woman’s brother-in-law, who was also in the car, suffered a head injury and was rushed to hospital. The family was first taken to Mohra Hospital before being referred to Baramulla. The woman and the child died on the way.
“They went to Mohra Hospital. They were referred to Baramulla. We also reached there, but they died on the way,” Altaf said. “One child had a heart problem but seemed fine at first. The doctor said he died on the spot.”
“When the shelling started around 9.30 pm, it was terrible. We’ve never seen such heavy shelling,” he added. “They thought they’d be safer in Baramulla. But this happened on the way.”
Heavy Shelling Along LoC, Multiple Pakistani Attacks Foiled
The cross-border shelling came as India neutralised multiple drone and missile attacks from Pakistan targeting military sites in Jammu, Pathankot, and Udhampur on Thursday night. According to the Indian defence ministry, the attacks were “swiftly neutralised using kinetic and non-kinetic capabilities,” and no casualties were reported in those incidents.
The shelling was reportedly part of a broader offensive by Pakistan, which attempted to strike 15 different locations across northern and western India using drones and missiles. These attacks came just days after India launched Operation Sindoor, a series of precision strikes on terror launchpads in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians.
In a separate development, a major infiltration attempt by suspected terrorists was also foiled by the Border Security Force (BSF) along the International Border in Jammu’s Samba district, further heightening the sense of urgency and tension in the region.
