The Government of India has launched the e-passport facility, enabling citizens across the country to apply for this next-generation travel document. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the e-passport was first rolled out on April 1, 2024, as part of a pilot program. At present, only a limited number of passport offices across India have the capability to issue these passports. However, the government intends to gradually extend the service to more centers in the coming months. The e-passport can be identified by a tiny gold-colored emblem printed beneath the title on the front cover, setting it apart from standard passports
What is an e-Passport in India?
An e-passport in India is an upgraded version of the traditional passport, integrating both physical and digital features. It comes with an embedded Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) chip and an antenna, which securely hold personal information along with biometric details such as fingerprints and a digital photograph.
On the outside, it can be recognized by a small gold symbol printed on the front cover, just beneath the passport title.
It’s worth noting that the e-passport is not a replacement for the standard passport but rather an advanced version aimed at strengthening security, increasing transparency, and making the process of international travel smoother and more efficient.

How to apply e-Passport:
Visit the official Passport Seva portal.
Register for a new account or sign in, then fill out the e-passport application form.
Select your nearest Passport Seva Kendra (PSK) or Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK).
Pay the applicable e-passport fee online.
Schedule an appointment at your chosen center.
Go to the PSK or POPSK on the appointment date for biometric enrollment and document verification.
