Yamuna water enters Delhi homes as flood fears rise; Gurugram shuts schools, offices

The flood threat in Delhi deepened on Tuesday as the Yamuna river breached its banks in Yamuna Bazaar, with water starting to enter residential colonies and forcing people to shift to relief camps. At 6 am, the river's water level was recorded at 205.68 metres -- above the danger mark of 205.33 metres. Officials warned the level could swell further to around 206.50 metres by 5 pm.

Large volumes of water are being released every hour from the Hathnikund barrage in Haryana, adding to the risk of flooding in low-lying parts of the capital. An alert has been issued for these vulnerable areas, officials said.

The District Magistrate of Shahdara announced that traffic and public movement on the Loha Pul will be stopped from 5 pm on Tuesday due to the rising water level in the Yamuna.

Meanwhile, the weather department has forecast a cloudy sky with moderate rain in Delhi for Tuesday. The maximum temperature is expected to be around 31 degrees Celsius, while the minimum is likely to settle at 22 degrees Celsius.

Gurugram shuts schools, offices amid heavy rain forecast

Normal life in Gurugram was thrown out of gear on Monday as spells of heavy rain resulted in severe waterlogging and traffic snarls across the city. Between 3 pm and 7 pm, the city recorded over 100 mm of rainfall, prompting authorities to issue an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rain on September 2.

Several key stretches, including those near Hero Honda Chowk, Patel Nagar, and Signature Bridge, were heavily inundated. The service lane of the Dwarka Expressway was closed after large volumes of rainwater accumulated there, leading to a collapse of its drainage system. The expressway connects Delhi's Dwarka to Kherki Daula and several sectors of Gurugram, and was pounded by intense rainfall for over three hours.

In view of the forecast, the District Disaster Management Authority advised schools to shift to online classes and directed private offices to allow employees to work from home on Tuesday.
