OpenAI has announced an exciting offer for Indian users, the AI company is making its ChatGPT Go plan free for one year for those who sign up during a limited-time promotional period starting November 4. The move comes as part of OpenAI’s celebration of its first-ever DevDay Exchange event in Bengaluru, marking a major step in its growing focus on India. Here’s everything you need to know.
What Is ChatGPT Go?
ChatGPT Go is OpenAI’s subscription-based version of ChatGPT that offers an upgraded experience over the free tier. It runs on the latest GPT-5 model and brings a host of advanced features, including higher message limits, extended memory, more daily image generations, and the ability to upload files and images for analysis.
In simple terms, ChatGPT Go gives users a more powerful and flexible version of ChatGPT that can handle complex queries, generate visuals, and retain context across longer conversations.
Why India Is Getting It For Free
OpenAI says this offer is a way to thank Indian users for their enthusiasm and creativity since ChatGPT Go’s launch in August. According to the company, India has become its second-largest and one of the fastest-growing markets for ChatGPT globally. Within just a month of launch, the number of paid subscribers in India reportedly doubled, highlighting the country’s strong appetite for AI tools.
Nick Turley, Vice President and Head of ChatGPT, said, “Ahead of our first DevDay Exchange event in India, we’re making ChatGPT Go freely available for a year to help more people across India easily access and benefit from advanced AI.”
The offer will be open to all users in India who sign up during the limited promotional window starting November 4, and even existing ChatGPT Go subscribers will be eligible for the free year, with more details to follow.
India’s Growing Role In OpenAI’s Global Strategy
Earlier this year, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed that India is the company’s second-largest market after the United States. Despite the massive user base, monetising ChatGPT’s paid plans in India has been challenging. According to Appfigures data reviewed by TechCrunch, while ChatGPT saw over 29 million downloads in 90 days, it generated only $3.6 million in in-app purchases during that period.
