Chennai Weather Today: Residents in Chennai are set to experience more rain on Monday (November 24), with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow alert. Commuters may face waterlogging and traffic woes on key routes. Therefore, they are advised to leave their homes early. The heavy rainfall is reportedly triggered by a new low-pressure system forming over the Strait of Malacca, which is expected to move into the Bay of Bengal.
If formed, the developing system will be called ‘Cyclone Seynar,’ meaning lion, a name that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) suggested. According to Manorama Mohanty, Director of the Bhubaneswar IMD office, it is too early to call it a cyclone. “We have so far forecast only a depression. We will issue more information after the low-pressure area forms on November 22,” she said, as reported earlier.
Impact on Chennai
While several districts in Tamil Nadu are on high alert for more than heavy rain, Chennai is likely to bypass. Unlike other cities, it will be less impacted by the developing cyclonic system in the Bay of Bengal. According to an IMD Bulletin, the city is likely to see one or two spells of light to moderate rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.
“The system is complex, so we need to wait for more clarity,” he cautioned, adding that Chennai could still experience sudden intense spells till Tuesday, said a weather blogger, Pradeep John, in an online update.
