In the vast expanse of Hindu mythology, even gods are not immune to pride. One of the most dramatic episodes in the Puranas describes a celestial war between Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu, both embodiments of creation and preservation, fighting to prove their supremacy. The conflict was so fierce that it threatened the balance of the universe until Shiva intervened, teaching them the eternal truth of humility.
1. The Beginning of the Divine Dispute
It began when Brahma, the Creator, claimed superiority, declaring that Vishnu was born from his navel and thus his creation. Vishnu, the Preserver, countered that Brahma himself emerged from a lotus sprouting from his own navel. This argument of divine origin soon spiraled into a cosmic standoff, a clash of egos that shook the heavens.
2. The War of the Gods
Brahma and Vishnu unleashed celestial weapons, each displaying unimaginable power. The universe trembled under their might, the elements raged, and even the devas (gods) watched in fear. Neither could overpower the other, for both were essential forces of the same cosmic truth, but blinded by pride, they failed to see it.
3. Shiva Appears as an Endless Pillar of Light
To end their futile battle, Lord Shiva manifested as a colossal pillar of light, the Jyotirlinga, stretching infinitely in both directions. Stunned, Brahma and Vishnu decided to test its limits: Vishnu took the form of a boar (Varaha) to find its end below, while Brahma became a swan (Hamsa) to seek its top.
4. The Truth Revealed and Brahma’s Lie
After searching endlessly, Vishnu humbly returned, admitting he could not find Shiva’s beginning or end. Brahma, however, lied, claiming he had reached the top and brought a Ketaki flower as proof. Seeing through the deceit, Shiva grew furious. He appeared between them and cursed Brahma that he would not be worshipped on Earth, while blessing Vishnu for his humility and truth.
5. The Birth of the Jyotirlinga
From that moment, the Jyotirlinga became a symbol of Shiva’s infinite power and the truth that creation, preservation, and destruction are bound by the same divine essence. This event also explains why temples to Vishnu and Shiva are countless, while Brahma is worshipped in only a few, most notably at Pushkar in Rajasthan.

Shiva’s fiery form reminded even the gods that the source of all creation cannot be claimed, only realized.
