Panic has gripped parts of south Mumbai after the sudden deaths of a family of four in Pydhonie, with ripple effects now visible in local markets. Even as authorities await crucial lab results, a new and unusual challenge has emerged — investigators are unable to find any watermelon samples in the very area where the suspected food item was consumed.

Watermelon Vanishes From Local Markets

According to a report by The Indian Express, teams from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have been surveying the Pydhonie locality since Sunday but have not found a single vendor selling watermelon.

Officials described the situation as “bizarre”, noting that this is the first time they have encountered a case where a suspected food item has completely disappeared from local markets during an ongoing probe. Despite repeated visits over multiple days, no samples could be collected, a critical step in identifying the source of contamination.

Fear Hits Sales, Buyers Return Fruit

The deaths have triggered widespread fear, sharply impacting watermelon sales across nearby markets. Vendors at Crawford Market and Byculla reported a noticeable drop in demand, with some even seeing customers return previously purchased fruit.

Juice centres, too, are feeling the pinch, with watermelon juice orders reportedly dropping by nearly 50%. While some sellers insist their regular customers remain unfazed, many others say misinformation and panic have significantly hurt business.

The Incident That Sparked Panic

On April 27, Abdullah Dokadia (40), his wife Naseem (35), and their daughters Ayesha (16) and Zainab (13) died within hours of being hospitalised. The family had reportedly consumed watermelon after a meal that included biryani following a small gathering at home.

Relatives said the four began vomiting and fell semi-conscious shortly after eating, deteriorating rapidly before succumbing at hospital.

Probe Expands, Cause Still Unclear

Investigators have collected multiple food samples from the family’s residence, including leftover watermelon, biryani, rice, spices, chicken, and even drinking water. These have been sent for laboratory testing, with results expected soon.

However, officials stress that lab findings alone will not determine the cause of death. Forensic analysis and post-mortem reports will also play a crucial role in establishing what exactly led to the tragedy.

Not Typical Food Poisoning, Say Doctors

Doctors have cautioned against jumping to conclusions. Experts told The Indian Express that the rapid deterioration seen in this case does not align with typical food poisoning patterns. Some have pointed to the possibility of toxic or chemical exposure, though nothing has been confirmed yet.

They also dismissed viral claims linking watermelon consumption after biryani to health risks, stating there is no scientific basis for such theories.

Mystery Deepens

With no similar cases reported in the area and the suspected fruit missing from markets, the investigation has taken an unusual turn. Authorities are now relying heavily on lab and forensic reports to piece together what happened, even as public anxiety continues to grow.
