ICC confirms dates for 2027 ODI World Cup as 14-team format makes a comeback

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has set a tentative date window for the 2027 ODI World Cup, which will be shared-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. The 14-team event is anticipated to be held between October 4 and November 21, as per ESPNcricinfo.

The dates on the schedule were discussed and given the green light in a Board meeting of ICC conducted in Ahmedabad at the time of the IPL 2026 final match between Gujarat Titans and Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

Further details of the tournament are expected to be ratified at the ICC Annual General Meeting in Edinburgh this July. South Africa is set to host the majority of the matches, with eight venues earmarked to stage 41 of the tournament's 54 games. Zimbabwe will host fixtures across three venues — Harare Sports Club, Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo and the upcoming Fale Mosi-oa-Tunya International Cricket Stadium in Victoria Falls.

The Victoria Falls venue is expected to be completed later this year and will host domestic matches ahead of its official inauguration in May 2027.

The 2027 edition will mark the ODI World Cup's return to South Africa for the first time since 2003. It will also see the tournament expand back to a 14-team format after the previous two editions in England and India featured only 10 teams.

The 14 participating teams will be split into two groups of seven, with the top three sides from each group progressing to the Super Six stage. Hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe have secured automatic qualification as Full Members of the ICC, while co-host Namibia will need to earn its place through the qualification pathway.
