Booking train tickets on IRCTC could soon become a lot smoother. After repeated complaints from students at MNIT Jaipur about slow performance, glitches and website crashes during peak booking hours, Indian Railways is preparing to roll out a revamped IRCTC website.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has announced that the new IRCTC website is expected to be launched by July 15. The upgrade is part of a larger overhaul of Indian Railways’ passenger reservation infrastructure aimed at handling the increasing demand for online ticket bookings.

According to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the new IRCTC website is expected to go live by July 15, 2026.

Faster Ticket Booking Capacity

One of the biggest upgrades is the increase in booking capacity.

Current system: Around 32,000 ticket bookings per minute

New system: More than 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute

This represents nearly a five-fold increase and could significantly reduce congestion during high-demand periods such as Tatkal bookings and festival travel seasons.

Ticket Enquiry Capacity to Jump 10 Times

Passengers often check train availability, waitlist status and fares before booking.

The new reservation system will dramatically improve enquiry capacity.

Current capacity: Around 4 lakh enquiries per minute

New capacity: More than 40 lakh enquiries per minute

This means users should experience fewer delays while searching for trains and checking seat availability.

New Features Passengers Should Know About

The upgraded Passenger Reservation System (PRS) is expected to introduce several passenger-friendly features.

Seat Choice Option

Passengers will be able to submit their preferred seat choices during booking.

This feature is expected to offer greater flexibility, especially for families, senior citizens and travellers who prefer lower berths or specific coach positions.

Fare Calendar

A new fare calendar will help users compare ticket prices across different travel dates.

The feature could make trip planning easier by allowing passengers to identify cheaper travel days before confirming their bookings.

Multilingual Interface

The platform will support multiple languages, making it more accessible for users across different parts of India.

The multilingual interface aims to simplify ticket booking and enquiry processes for passengers who prefer regional languages.

Better Support for Special Categories

The new system will include integrated facilities for:

Divyangjan passengers

Students

Patients

Indian Railways says these services will be available within the same booking ecosystem, reducing the need for multiple processes.

Will Tatkal Booking Become Easier?

While Indian Railways has not specifically announced changes to Tatkal booking rules, the increased booking capacity could help reduce website slowdowns during the crucial Tatkal booking window.

Passengers who often struggle with server errors, payment failures and booking delays may benefit from the stronger backend infrastructure once the new system becomes operational.
