A green-painted house in Nepal’s Nuwakot district has emerged as a striking image of survival after devastating flash floods swept through the area on August 26. While several homes around it were destroyed, the house remained standing, with six people inside eventually rescued by neighbours.
The house, located in Trishuli, became widely known after visuals of it surrounded by raging floodwaters and debris spread across social media. Its owner, Lakshmi Pandey, has now recalled the terrifying experience and described the family’s survival as a “second life”.
Speaking to ANI, Pandey said she and her husband were at their shop, around five minutes from their home, when they learnt that floodwaters were approaching. Her mother-in-law and daughter were inside the house at the time.
"We immediately ran back home because my mother-in-law and daughter were alone there," she said.
The family initially tried to move everyone to safety. Pandey went to the terrace and warned her mother-in-law about the approaching floodwaters and urged her to leave the house.
Her mother-in-law was initially reluctant, saying that the area had never experienced such a massive flood. The situation changed within moments when an old bridge nearby collapsed.
