New Income Tax Update: The income tax department has introduced a new feature within the Annual Information Statement (AIS) to enable taxpayers to monitor the status of the information confirmation process. This development aims to enhance transparency and accuracy in tax reporting by providing taxpayers with insights into their financial transactions that could impact their tax liabilities, TOI reported.

Insight into Financial Transactions

The AIS aggregates financial data received from various sources to furnish taxpayers with a comprehensive overview of their financial activities. It encompasses a wide array of transactions that taxpayers engage in, each potentially carrying tax implications.

Interactive Feedback Mechanism

One notable feature of the AIS is its interactive feedback mechanism, empowering taxpayers to provide comments on each transaction listed. This feedback mechanism serves as a crucial tool for taxpayers to validate the accuracy of the information sourced from external entities. If discrepancies are identified, the tax authorities automatically initiate the rectification process with the respective information sources.

Addressing Past Challenges

Past experiences, such as difficulties encountered by taxpayers regarding jointly held fixed deposits, have prompted authorities to devise innovative solutions. In response, the AIS now incorporates tools to tackle such challenges more effectively. The system provides clarity on whether the feedback provided by taxpayers has been acknowledged by the respective information sources. If the feedback is accepted partially or in full, the onus lies on the source to rectify the information by submitting a correction statement.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) emphasizes that the information confirmation feature is presently operational for data provided by tax deductors or collectors and reporting entities. This signifies a proactive approach by tax authorities to ensure the accuracy and reliability of financial data utilized for tax assessment purposes.

This initiative not only fosters transparency but also empowers taxpayers to actively participate in ensuring the accuracy of their tax-related information.
