Delhi Rains: Delhi is about to get some relief, as it is expected to get light rain late in the evening, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday. The Safdarjung observatory, the city's official marker, recorded a high of 44 degrees Celsius, four degrees above the season's average.
According to the department, thunderstorms will hit Delhi (Jafarpur, IGI Airport, Ayanagar, Deramandi) and surrounding areas of the NCR late in the evening, accompanied by light to heavy rain and gusty gusts ranging from 30 to 50 kilometres per hour.
On Thursday, the maximum temperature recorded at the Safdarjung Observatory was at 44.8 degrees Celsius, which is 4.9 notches above the normal. As a result, Delhi was placed under an 'orange' alert for heatwave.
The relative humidity in the city oscillated between 15 per cent and 58 per cent, according to the IMD bulletin.
While monsoons are still expected in Northern India amid ongoing heatwaves, monsoons have already arrived in Kerala, Gujarat, and Maharashtra, with heavy rains recorded in Mumbai last week. Monsoon arrived sooner than expected in some states (like Maharashtra and Kerala), other states (including Jharkhand, Bihar, Delhi, and Punjab) are still waiting for relief.
A heatwave warning has been issued for Delhi till June 18, while the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heatwave conditions in portions of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, and Jharkhand until June 16.
