The interim government of Bangladesh, led by Muhammad Yunus, is determined to imprison former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Once again, the government has stated that all efforts are being made to bring her back from India. The Yunus-led administration plans to prosecute Hasina for crimes against humanity and genocide. She is also accused of involvement in cases of forced disappearances. If convicted, she could face life in prison.
Amid these developments, the interim government has taken another step. Bangladesh's International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has issued an arrest warrant against Sheikh Hasina and others. The government is now working with Interpol to issue a Red Corner Notice against her and other accused individuals, aiming to facilitate their extradition from India.
Bangladesh's efforts to extradite Sheikh Hasina
Bangladesh had sent a diplomatic note to India last year, requesting the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. However, the extradition has not yet taken place. According to Home Department Advisor Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, authorities are arresting individuals within the country while continuing efforts to bring back those residing abroad. He emphasized that Hasina, the key figure in the case, is currently outside Bangladesh, making her arrest difficult. The government is pursuing legal measures to bring her back.
Interpol's involvement
The Bangladeshi government has also sought Interpol's assistance in issuing a Red Corner Notice against Hasina. This would facilitate her extradition from India. Once Interpol issues the notice, member countries are obligated to arrest the accused individuals. Police Chief Baharul Alam expressed confidence that Interpol would soon act on the request from the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) and issue the necessary notices.
