Amid US President Donald Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigrants, 104 people were deported to India on military plane earlier in the day. Out of the 104 people, 33 were of Gujarati descent. Upon learning about their undocumented status in America, their families expressed shock and some even said that they were not even aware about their stay in the US.

According to a report in India Today, a woman from Gujarat, identified as Nikita Patel, had not told her family about her actual location in the US as her family assumed that she was on a trip to Europe.

‘We Are In Shock About…’

“We are in shock about my daughter being sent back from America. We hope that she returns safely. She only spoke about staying in Europe and there was no talk of going to the US. We got information through the media that 33 people from Gujarat are being sent back,” India Today quoted her father Kanubhai Patel, as saying.

Kanubhai termed Trump’s latest move linked with immigration policy as wrong, adding that many Gujarati and Punjabi people live in the US and they should not be sent back.

“Many people go there by spending money. Their families will suffer due to this (illegal immigration crackdown),” the news report quoted him as saying.

The report mentioned that another Gujarati man, identified as Ketul Patel, had moved to the US about a year ago after selling his flat in Surat. Prafulbhai Patel, who bought the same flat, said he was saddened about Ketul’s illegal stay in the US.

“He (Ketul) shouldn’t have done this. If he had to go to America, he should have stayed there legally. The family is very good in nature,” India Today quoted him as saying.

Among the deportees were three members of the Gohil family hailing from Gandhinagar. The family includes Kiransingh Gohil, his wife Mittalben and son Heyansh. It is learnt that the trio had moved to the US a month ago.

Kiransingh’s mother got emotional after hearing about the news about her family and expressed that she had no clue how they made it to the US. She said they were not in contact for the past 15 days. “The villagers also don’t know how they went to the US. It would be good if they come back soon,” she said.

Gujarati Immigrants Likely To Arrive In Ahmedabad Tomorrow

Of the 33 people from Gujarat, 12 belong to Mehsana and Gandhinagar each. Besides, four people hail from Surat, two from Ahmedabad and one each from Kheda, Vadodara and Patan districts.

The Gujarat government is keeping an eye on the 33 deportees who are expected to arrive in Ahmedabad on Thursday.
