The Chinese Embassy in India has issued over 85,000 visas to Indian citizens between January 1 and April 9, 2025, intending to rebuild trust and promote people-to-people ties. This comes at a time when global tensions are rising, particularly due to tariff threats by US President Donald Trump.
Chinese Ambassador Xu Feihong, on X, said, "As of April 9, 2025, the Chinese Embassy and Consulates in India have issued more than 85,000 visas to Indian citizens travelling to China this year. We welcome more Indian friends to visit China and experience an open, safe, vibrant, sincere, and friendly China."
Relaxed Visa Rules for Indian Travellers
China has introduced a series of visa relaxations to make travel easy and affordable for Indian citizens:
1. No prior online appointments are now needed to submit visa applications.
2. Short-term travellers are exempted from providing biometric data, which helps speed up the process.
3. Visa fees have been slashed, making it more accessible for students, tourists, and business travellers alike.
4. To accommodate the growing demand, a quicker processing time is introduced.

China is actively promoting seasonal festivals and cultural landmarks to attract Indian tourists.
Strengthening Economic and Strategic Cooperation
China’s visa outreach comes amid heightened global trade uncertainty. President Donald Trump has continued to issue tariff threats targeting major economies, including China.
Chinese Embassy spokesperson Yu Jing said, "China-India economic and trade relationship is based on complementarity and mutual benefit."

Despite continued tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC), China’s visa gesture is being viewed as a soft power move.
The step aligns with efforts by both countries to resume student exchange and medical education programs, which had been disrupted during the COVID-19 pandemic. Thousands of Indian students are once again travelling to China to continue their studies, particularly in medical universities.
