A quiet village in Rajasthan’s Jhunjhunu district turned into a scene of high drama after a married woman returned from Bengaluru with another woman she had reportedly been living with in a same-sex relationship. The incident, reported from Mainpura village in the Udaipurwati police station area, triggered outrage from the woman’s in-laws and her own family, who confronted the couple and created a ruckus.
According to local police and eyewitness accounts, the married woman had left her husband’s home several months ago, alleging physical abuse and alcoholism. She then moved to Bengaluru, where she began living with a younger woman. Their bond reportedly evolved into a romantic relationship. Ten days ago, the two women returned to the married woman’s native village in Jhunjhunu, which led to escalating tensions.
When her in-laws learned of her return and her new relationship, they rushed to her parental home in Mainpura and objected strongly to the arrangement. Villagers reported heated scenes, with loud arguments breaking out between family members and the two women. The situation turned volatile enough that local police had to intervene.
Officers from Udaipurwati police station arrived at the scene to de-escalate the conflict. Both women told police they were adults acting of their own volition and sought protection from their families, citing threats to their lives.
The married woman told the police that she had left her husband due to domestic violence and had no intention of returning to either her in-laws or her parents. She alleged that both sides were threatening her with dire consequences.
The police clarified that under the law, both individuals, being adults, have the right to choose how and with whom they wish to live. “They have sought protection and we have assured them that their safety will be ensured,” a police official told local media.
Meanwhile, the married woman’s parents had previously lodged a missing person report, claiming their daughter had eloped. That report has now been withdrawn following confirmation that she had returned of her own accord. The woman, who has studied up to Class 5 and is a mother to a four-year-old son, said she has left her past life behind and wants to live freely without fear.
The case has stirred debates in the village, with many shocked by the nature of the relationship and the dramatic fallout. However, police say no criminal case has been registered as both women are adults and no coercion has been alleged.
