Opening his UN General Assembly speech, US President Donald Trump remarked, “I don’t mind speaking without a teleprompter because that way, you speak more from the heart.” He added that whoever was running the teleprompter “is in big trouble.”
Criticism of the UN and Biden Administration
Standing before top UN officials and more than 150 world leaders, Trump criticized the international organisation for not consulting him on conflicts he claims to have resolved. “I’ve always said the UN has such tremendous, tremendous potential. But it’s not even coming close to living up to that potential,” he said. “For the most part, at least for now, all they seem to do is write a really strongly worded letter and then never follow that letter. It’s empty words and empty words don’t solve wars.” Trump also targeted former President Joe Biden, continuing his pattern of comparing US performance under his administration to that of the current Democratic administration.
Bragging About US Supremacy
Trump highlighted the strength of the US economy and national influence, claiming, “the US is the hottest country anywhere in the world, and there is no other country even close.” He added that the US is “the best country on Earth to do business” and that the economy is “bigger and even better” than during his first term, which he described as “the greatest … in the history of the world.” He further said the US is “respected again” like never before. Observers noted that frequent superlatives rather than verifiable facts were unusual in diplomatic settings, though the approach echoed his recent state visit to the United Kingdom.
