South Africa scripted history as they defeated India by 408 runs in the second Test at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati. Chasing a target of 549, the win was out of the equation for India, but many expected the hosts to show some fight and at least draw the Test. But the batting collapsed on Day 5, and the team was bowled out for 140.
A defeat in the first Test meant that India lost the series 2-0, their second clean sweep at home in less than 12 months.
South Africa Hand India Their Worst Defeat
South Africa dominated the game from the word go and handed India their worst defeat in Test cricket history. They became the first team to beat India by 400+ runs in a Test match, going past Australia, who defeated India by 342 runs in Nagpur.

The series defeats to New Zealand and South Africa came back-to-back years. India had only lost two home series between 2000 and the New Zealand drubbing last year - against Australia in 2004 and England in 2012. The last time India lost back-to-back series at home was way back in 1883 and 1984/85, when the team was beaten by West Indies and England, respectively.
This was also the third clean sweep for India at home. They lost 0-2 to South Africa in 2000 before losing to New Zealand 0-3 last year and 0-2 to South Africa now.
Meanwhile, this was South Africa's second biggest win after the 492-run win against Australia in 2018. The team has shown remarkable improvement under Temba Bavuma, who has now won 11 out of the 12 Tests and is yet to concede a defeat. South Africa have also cracked the subcontinent puzzle and are undefeated in Asia in the last three series. They beat Bangladesh 2-0, drew Pakistan 1-1, and beat India 2-0.
