Your PAN Card Number Isn’t Random; Here’s What It Means

PAN card stands for the Permanent Account Number. It is an essential identity card for financial transactions in India. From filing important financial documents like taxes, returns to being financially dependent by taking small steps like opening a bank account or conducting high-value transactions, the PAN is the key aspect of your financial identification. A PAN card makes sure about your compliance and accountability regarding your financial stakes. However, the most unknown fact about a PAN card is that at first glance, the alpha-numeric 10-digit code on your PAN may seem random to you, but every character in it carries a specific meaning. Let’s decode the structure of your PAN and what exactly it means.

Structure Of A PAN Card Number:

For instance, let’s take a typical PAN that looks like this -ABCDS1234R. To break down this number:

1. The first three letters of PAN are a random alphabetic series, issued sequentially (AAA to ZZZ).

2. The fourth letter represents the type of PAN holder. For example, P for Individual, C is for Company, H is for HUF (Hindu Undivided Family), F is for Firm, and A is Association of Persons.

3. The most intriguing part is that the fifth letter of your PAN card number is the first letter of the cardholder’s surname or the entity’s name. For example, if your surname is Singh, then S will be the 5th letter of your PAN.

4. The next four digits of your PAN number are a sequential number from 0001 to 9999.

5. The last letter of your PAN is an alphabetic check digit, which is generated through a formula to prevent duplication and fraud of your PAN card.

For Example:

If your PAN is ABCPK1234D:

-  ABC is the series.

-  P shows it belongs to an individual.

-  K indicates the cardholder’s surname starts with K.

-  1234 is the serial number.

- D is the check digit to validate authenticity.

Why PAN Card Number Matters?

The PAN card number matters because it is the unique sequence that ensures the accuracy of identification, which means that no two PANs are identical. Additionally, the PAN card numbers are also significant to track financial activities that help the Income Tax Department keep a check on taxable transactions. Lastly, the PAN also help detect errors as the final check digit serves as a safeguard against mistakes in data entry.

Therefore, the next time you look at your PAN card, know that it is a carefully designed system to uniquely identify you in the diverse financial ecosystem.

A star outshines an entire galaxy in NASA's latest image captured by Hubble Telescope. See pic

Snapshot of the star that stood out in the galaxy. © Provided by Deepak kumar blogs N ASA never fails to amaze us with wonderful pictures of the stars and the galaxy. This time, the space agency shared an image of a single star that stole the show. The image was captured by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope and shows a star and a galaxy that are in the constellation Lacerta (The Lizard). Elaborating on this celestial marvel,  NASA  explained, "The star is a million times closer to us than the galaxy, which lies more than 45 million light-years away. This relative closeness is the only way a star can outshine an entire galaxy containing billions of stars."  They further added, "This star is what astronomers call a 'foreground star,' and it's a bit of a nuisance. Its light can contaminate fainter light from more distant objects that astronomers want to study." Talking more about the foreground stars, NASA shared, "In a technique called microlensing,...

NASA's Hubble Telescope captures mesmerising colourful eruption of a 'stellar volcano'

NASA's Hubble Telescope captures mesmerising colourful eruption of a 'stellar volcano' T he cosmos has once again dazzled us! The Hubble Space Telescope recently revealed a striking image of two stars locked in a fascinating dance. This captivating nebula showcases the intricate relationship of these celestial neighbours, a tale centuries in the making. The hourglass-shaped nebula forms from the interaction between two distinct stars. One is a compact white dwarf, while the other is a massive red giant. This red giant is over 400 times larger than our sun and has a brightness that fluctuates over a 387-day cycle. Located about 710 light-years from Earth, this star system is called R Aquarii. It is classified as a symbiotic variable star, a term that mirrors biological symbiosis. This means two different stars exist close together and interact continuously. Explosive Outbursts: The Dynamics of Stellar Evolution The white dwarf orbits the red giant every 44 years. During th...
