India not withdrawing forces will imperil democracy in Maldives, defence ties will continue: President Muizzu

  In an exclusive interview to TOI, his first to any Indian media outlet, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu said India not withdrawing its forces from the Indian Ocean archipelago will amount to disregarding the ``democratic will’’ of the Maldivian people, and will imperil the future of democracy in the country. However, as he rejected any permanent military presence, the president backed defence cooperation with India, including in the form of efforts to build the operational readiness of the Maldives National Defence Force, saying it’s based on mutual respect and trust. He expressed confidence the issue of military presence will be resolved through dialogue. Karnataka Covid cases jump 75% in 24 hours, one more death recorded
