India Today 605.6K Followers Alert! Scientists have made a big discovery on Moon's far side

China's Chang'e-6 spacecraft has delivered results even before the rocks and soil it collected could reach Earth. A European Space Agency probe that tagged along with the Chinese spacecraft has made a new discovery on the Moon's far side.  The first European instrument to land on the Moon detected the presence of  negative ions on the lunar surface . These could be produced through interactions with the solar wind. The Negative Ions at the Lunar Surface (NILS) instrument being operated by European scientists confirmed the detection of a new component of plasma at the surface of the Moon. This opens a new window for space physics and for human and robotic missions in an era of renewed lunar exploration.   moon "This was ESA's first activity on the surface of the Moon, a world-first scientifically, and a first lunar cooperation with China. We have collected an amount and quality of data far beyond our expectations," says Neil Melville, ESA's technical of...

3.7-billion-year-old time capsule found in Greenland reveals ancient secret

G eologists from MIT and Oxford University have made a groundbreaking discovery in Greenland, unearthing rocks, the natural time capsules, that offer a glimpse into Earth's ancient past.  These rocks, estimated to be about 3.7 billion years old, contain the earliest remnants of the planet's magnetic field, shedding light on its early conditions and potential implications for the emergence of life. The findings,  published in the Journal of Geophysical Research , indicate that the ancient magnetic field had a strength of at least 15 microtesla, comparable to Earth's present-day magnetic field. This revelation extends the timeline of Earth's magnetic field by an additional 200 million years, hinting at its crucial role in shaping the planet's habitability. Dr. Claire Nichols, now an associate professor at Oxford University, highlighted the significance of  Earth's magnetic field  in creating a conducive environment for life. "Our magnetic field protects us...

Evolving relationship dynamics have led to postponement of parenthood.  But can your biological clock also wait that long? More and more women are opting to conceive later in life,  defying conventional timelines . Yet, amidst the marvels of modern medicine, complexities and controversies arise, since biology marches to its own rhythm, and the female reproductive system is no exception. A study released by the Office for National Statistics in 2020 indicates a growing trend towards delayed motherhood.  More women are entering their 30s without children  than at any other time in history.  More and more women are opting to conceive later in ...

You may just have the Neanderthal DNA! Here are 6 traits to watch out

The Neanderthals were a cousin species of humans but not a direct ancestor (Photo: Reuters) Throughout modern humans’ genetic makeup, approximately two percent of our DNA is inherited from Neanderthals. The inherited DNA has shaped various traits and susceptibilities, as disclosed by experts. These genetic imprints, originating from an era of interbreeding between humans and Neanderthals, subtly impact present-day humans, underscoring an ancient mingling of genetics.  As modern humans migrated out of Africa nearly 60,000 years ago, they intermingled with Neanderthals, dispersing their DNA across continents. Geneticist Sebnem Unluisler, affiliated with the London Regenerative Institute, highlights the broad spectrum of effects encompassing everything from hair characteristics to tendencies toward nicotine addiction due to Neanderthal DNA integration. Specifically, a section of Neanderthal DNA notably increases the risk of nicotine addiction, despite the irony of Neanderthals ...
