Kerala student hijab row © Saumya Agrawal Kochi, Kerala: A student in Kochi has decided to withdraw from St Rita’s School following a controversy over wearing a hijab. The girl, who joined the school in June, began attending classes with a hijab on October 8, but school authorities stopped her from wearing it, citing uniform rules. Kerala Education Minister V Sivankutty, who had earlier called on the school to respect the student’s right, said the school must answer to the government regarding her decision to leave. “The girl has every right to study in the school. The reason for her decision to move out of the school has to be examined,” he said. The local Muslim community protested at the school. After this, the school sought police protection and approached the High Court.
